INTRODUCING URBAN PLANNING

Course Overview

This course will serve as an introduction to both the field of urban planning and the BPPTP. It will discuss the causes and challenges of rapid urbanization and contemporary planning practice. The primary objective of the course is to provide an understanding of the historical context within which modern urban planning has evolved, the different planning paradigms, Principles and theories of urban structure and institutions and the role played by planners. The course will shed light on major planning challenges facing urban communities in the UAE and potential planning responses.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss how contemporary urban planning has evolved in western societies since the Industrial Revolution to date and reflect that on the planning history in the UAE.
  • Understand the depth and extent of how urban planning impacts the physical, economic and social development of societies.
  • Understand the various paradigms, techniques, tools of urban planning practice.
  • Become fluent in the terminology, major issues and professional debates in planning.
