TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (TOD)
Course Overview:
This course will explore the importance of the transportation/ land use nexus in achieving sustainable development. Specifically, it will introduce the concepts of sustainable urban development, new urbanism, quality of life, urban livability, place-making and transit oriented development. The course will focus on discussing the factors that influence the creation of successful places from multiple perspectives. It will explore these issue and examine a range of techniques to review and explore real options for successful transit oriented development, drawing upon real life international examples as well as examining the TOD potential for the cities of the UAE.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the relationship between TOD, urban sustainability, livability and place making.
- Understand the factors that can lead to the creation of successful TOD.
- Should be able to recognize opportunities for TOD 'retrofitting' and the planning and urban design mechanisms that facilitate it.
