The Basic Planning Practitioners’ Training Program (BPPTP)
The BPPTP will be offered for the first time by the EPA during the 2020/21 learning year and it is primarily intended for all planning practitioners who have not received formal planning education and would like to systematically learn the fundamentals of planning and plan making in the context of the UAE. The program consists of five courses covering both theoretical and practical learning and bringing together up to date international experiences and UAE-focused applications. The entire five courses program will be conducted in a total of 105 learning hours i.e. 15 divided days, after which the graduates will receive “EPA’s Basic Planning Practitioners’ Training Program Certificate”. Each one of the five courses can also be taken as individual stand-alone courses and attendees can earn executive education certificates for each course attended. The remaining parts of this section will offer detailed explanation of the program structure, schedule, course by course overview and expected learning outcomes.
INTRODUCING URBAN PLANNING
This course will serve as an introduction to both the field of urban planning and the BPPTP. It will discuss the causes and challenges of rapid urbanization and contemporary planning practice.

URBAN PLANNING LEGISLATION, GOVERNANCE AND INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORKS
This course will discuss the legal basis of urban planning and development. Planning legislation is the source of legitimacy upon which planning powers are defined and practiced in the real world.

LONG-RANGE SPATIAL PLAN MAKING
Planner's primary role is to prepare and execute plans of different types and nature. This course aims to introduce long-range spatial plans (also known as general or comprehensive plans) and how they are typically prepared.

DETAILED PLANNING AND PLACE MAKING
This course will focus on developing the basic principles and skills required for preparing detailed area planning and essential elements of urban design. Examples of different types of areas will be used to demonstrate good design standards and practices.

TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (TOD)
This course will explore the importance of the transportation/ land use nexus in achieving sustainable development. Specifically, it will introduce the concepts of sustainable urban development, new urbanism, quality of life, urban livability, place-making and transit oriented development.

THE WALKABLE CITY
This course aims to introduce the concept of the “walkable city” through discussion of multiple scholarly and professional working definitions. Emphasis will be placed on the environmental, economic and epidemiological arguments for walkability in modern-day cities and as an intrinsic part of the mission of creating sustainable and people-centric communities and places.
