THE WALKABLE CITY

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course aims to introduce the concept of the “walkable city” through discussion of multiple scholarly and professional working definitions. Emphasis will be placed on the environmental, economic and epidemiological arguments for walkability in modern-day cities and as an intrinsic part of the mission of creating sustainable and people-centric communities and places. The main segment of the course will focus on an in-depth discussion and understanding of the key principles and techniques applied in the process of creating a “walkable city”. Finally, it will highlight the most important and internationally accepted walkability assessment/audit methods and their application within the UAE context.

  • Understand the multifaceted meanings of the “Walkable City”.
  • Importance and benefits of creating a “walkable city”.
  • Learn the principles and techniques used in achieving a walkable city.
  • Learn about the possible barriers that can impede achieving the walkable city and ways to overcomes those barriers.
